To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what research he has commissioned to investigate the causes of cerebral palsy;

(2) what steps his Department is taking to monitor trends in cerebral palsy.

[holding answer 22 January 1990]: None. The main agency through which the Government support biomedical and clinical research in the United Kingdom is the Medical Research Council. However, I understand the Department of Health is funding some research into the causes of cerebral palsy.
