Mr. Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total expenditure on prison education in the most recent available year and the three years previously; how much of the increase is attributable to inflation; and to what extent the increase is accounted for by educational provision at new prisons.

Mr. Waddington

Total expenditure on education in prison establishments for the most recent year available and the previous three years was as follows:

£ million
1988–89 25.2
1987–88 21.4
1986–87 18.9
1985–86 21.4

Between 1985–86 and 1988–89, the effect of inflation was £3.5 million: during the same period, £1.1 million was spent on providing education facilities at new prisons.
