Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what Government action is being taken to deal with dental health promotion and dental health education(a) nationally and (b) in north Staffordshire; what are the costs of such programmes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

The Department has commissioned two dental health education projects which are currently being piloted. The first, in the north-western region, is being run by the Health Education Authority, which has received financial support of £450,000 for the project in the last two years. The other, organised by the community dental health unit of Birmingham university and centred on the Dudley family practitioner committee area, has received £500,000 over the same period. Decisions on how to follow up these projects will depend on their evaluation.
