HC Deb 15 January 1990 vol 165 c102W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he is taking to evaluate the toxic pollution dangers of the use of(a) diacid ester hardeners, (b) acrylate, (c) silicate and aqua-reactive acrylic, (d) tanning/formaldehyde and (e)` resoranol/formaldehyde grouts in tunnel construction in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Trippier

The Department of the Environment is not taking any specific action to evaluate the toxic pollution dangers of the materials listed in the question used as grouts in tunnel construction. There are general requirements in the Water Act 1989 to ensure that the use of substances, including chemical grouts, does not cause pollution of surface or ground waters. Substances in contact with water that is supplied for drinking, washing and cooking are subject to specific provisions in the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989.
