HL Deb 15 January 1990 vol 514 c511WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the implications of the creation of the Single Market by 1992 for the control now exercised by national government over the disposal, including export, of works of art.

The Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Baroness Trumpington)

Under Articles 36 of the Treaty of Rome, member states are able to protect national treasures possessing artistic, historic or archaeological value. The completion of the Single Market will not affect this right but the practical arrangements for such controls will be the subject of further consideration.
