To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many factory inspectors are currently employed by the health and safety inspectorate; and how many were employed in the same month of 1979.

On 1 January 1990, 624.5factory inspectors were in post in the Health and Safety Executive. On 1 January 1979 the total was 709.5.
