§ Dr. Mawhinney[holding answer 21 December 1989]: In 1988–89 the Department of Education (NI) made direct grants of some £4.8 million to the Arts Council (NI) and other bodies in the arts field. Expenditure in support of the arts and of design, or design education, is not separately identifiable within the resources allocated to schools, colleges and universities.
