HC Deb 28 February 1990 vol 168 c217W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how many kidney transplants have been performed at the Cardiff royal infirmary so far in the current year; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how many kidney transplants were performed at the Cardiff royal infirmary in 1989; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Grist

A total of 66 transplants were carried out at Cardiff royal infirmary in 1989 and three so far this year.

Following completion of a Medical Research Council funded study of factors influencing the availability of donor organs for transplantation, health authorities in Wales have been asked to introduce an audit of deaths in intensive care units and to ensure that there are in place written procedures for the identification of donors and for the action needed to produce a successful donation.

In the light of recent consultation with health authorities on the report of the evaluation of renal services in Wales, Welsh Office officials will be considering with the managing health authority how the renal transplant programme may be further supported.
