HL Deb 27 February 1990 vol 516 c726WA
Lord Carmichael of Kelvingrove

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the procedures of the British Waterways Board which ensure that new developments on inland waterways are environmentally sympathetic.

Lord Hesketh

The board endeavours to ensure, through liaison with developers and local planning authorities, that all developments affecting the waterways under its control are in sympathy with their environment. In the case of development on its own land, it seeks to proceed by agreement in consultation with local interests in addition to the formal planning process. Responsibility for environmental and conservation matters rests with identified members of staff in each BWB region. All relevant BWB staff receive training in environmental and conservation management.
