HC Deb 27 February 1990 vol 168 cc126-7W
Mr. Wilkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many hospitals, mental institutions and other assets under the control of his Department have been sold in the last five years; and what is the sum of money received from the purchasers.

Mr. Freeman

The Department does not routinely hold information relating to the numbers of hospitals, mental institutions and other health authority assets sold. The total sum received from sales of assets in the last five years are as follows:

Years £ million
1984–85 50,655
1985–86 85,167
1986–87 148,996
1987–88 200,873
1988–89 271,339

Mr. Wilkinson

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how the money from the sale of hospitals, mental institutions and other assets under the control of his Department has been accounted for; and what is the method in which it has been reinvested.

Mr. Freeman

The total sum received by each health authority from the sale of hospitals, mental institutions and other assets is recorded in its annual accounts and by the Department in the appropriation account for vote XIV, 1. The receipts which are treated as appropriations in aid allow additional capital spending over cash limit allocations in the year in which they are received.
