HC Deb 27 February 1990 vol 168 cc119-20W
Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what information is available to him about the survivability of HIV in(a) dechlorinated tapwater, (b) settled raw sewage and (c) seawater.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

Studies on the survival of HIV in dechlorinated tap water, settled raw sewage and sea water have been carried out at the water research centre and published in "Water Science Technology", volume 21, pages 55 to 59, 1989, copies of which are available in the Library. The concentration of HIV added to samples of water declined rapidly in the first four days, a tenfold decline occurring after an average 1.8 days in dechlorinated tap water, 2.9 days in settled raw sewage and 1.6 days in sea water. The authors conclude that it is extremely unlikely that HIV poses any threat to disinfected water supplies.
