To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the latest figure he has for the number of units of blood held by the National Blood Transfusion Service; and what was the figure for(a) one year ago, (b) two years ago and (c) five years ago.

According to the national directorate of the Blood Transfusion Service, the average daily stock of blood held by the transfusion service in 1989 was 19,800 units. This was the first year in which such a statistic has been collected.
