HC Deb 27 February 1990 vol 168 c124W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the total amount of blood products imported into the United Kingdom from overseas in each of the three years up to 1989, or the latest years for which figures are available; what was the cost of such imports; and which countries were the major suppliers.

Mr. Freeman

Information on the total amount of blood products imported into the United Kingdom is not held centrally.

Figures for 1986, 1987, 1988 (the most recent held) relating to the usage of factor VIII concentrate are given in the table:

1986 1987 1988
United Kingdom usage of imported Factor VIII concentrate (millions of international units) 53.8 59.2 55.2

These are imported from other European countries and North America.
