To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the estimated cost of providing free bus travel to pensioners and disabled persons in England and Wales for the year 1989–90.

Total local authority expenditure on all travel concessions for pensioners, disabled persons and children in 1989–90 in England and Wales is estimated at £350 million. No information is available on how much of this expenditure is on free bus travel for pensioners and disabled persons.
