What would be the cost of abolishing the parental contribution to the student grant, and which families would benefit.

The cost of abolishing the parental contribution for students from England and Wales would be £390 million in the current academic year. The parents who would benefit most would be those whose residual income—and consequently their parental contribution—is highest. The benefit would diminish with the size of the parents' income; and parents whose residual income is lower than the threshold at which a contribution is assessed—£10,500 in the current academic year—would not benefit at all.
