HC Deb 26 February 1990 vol 168 c13W
Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what information he holds on(a) the number of cheque guarantee cards and credit cards presently in circulation and (b) those cheque guarantee cards which can also be used as credit cards.

Mr. Ryder

Data are not collected centrally in the form requested.

Mr. Harry Barnes

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he intends to introduce proposals to prevent banks from operating cheque guarantee card systems when, irrespective of their customers' wishes, those cards also operate as credit cards.

Mr. Ryder

It is a matter for a bank's commercial judgment whether it offers its customer a package which includes a combined credit and cheque guarantee card. However, under section 51 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, it is an offence to give a person a credit card if he has not asked for it.
