§ >The Prime MinisterThe Government work to protect the global environment through a wide range of international organisations including the European Community, the United Nations and the OECD. Our £3 million annual contribution to the United Nations environment programme is the third highest in the world. In my speech to the United Nations General Assembly last 879W November I drew attention to the problem of global climate change, one of the greatest threats to the world environment. I also reiterated our call for an international framework convention on climate change which has been widely supported. We are playing an active part in the intergovernmental panel on climate change and we have committed an additional £100 million over the next three years to help conserve tropical forests.
