To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what are the latest available figures for the annual cost of employing(a) a primary teacher, (b) a secondary teacher and (c) a teacher in further education.

In April 1989 the estimated average cost, including employers' on-costs, of employing a primary teacher outside London was £16,190 per annum. The comparable figure for a secondary teacher is £17,490 per annum. The estimated average cost of employing a further education lecturer, including those in London, was £18,400 per annum.
