HC Deb 21 February 1990 vol 167 c824W
Mr. David Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will outline the steps he intends to take to ensure that the drivers' hours and rest period regulations, vehicle weights and dimensions are conformed to by foreign international hauliers within the United Kingdom, following elimination of frontier checks.

Mr. Atkins

Traffic examiners will continue to carry out selective checks on United Kingdom and foreign heavy goods vehicles at ports and inland sites. Checks will be carried out without discrimination of vehicles or drivers. Vehicles will be weighed in the ports using more automated weighing systems being installed for this purpose.

Drivers' tachograph charts will be checked to ensure that drivers are complying with the legal requirements for driving limits and rest. Vehicle dimensions will also be checked to ensure that they conform with the requirements of United Kingdom law.
