HC Deb 21 February 1990 vol 167 c844W
Mr. John D. Taylor

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans there are to reduce the fishing effort in the North sea; what are the implications for fishing in the western waters of the United Kingdom; whether he has any proposals to reduce the overall size of the United Kingdom fishing fleet; and if he will make a statement about the displacement of part of the United Kingdom fleets in the North sea to the Irish sea.

Mr. Curry

I hope to make an announcement soon on arrangements to reduce North sea haddock fishing in 1990. Access to pressure stocks and non-pressure stocks in other sea areas will remain restricted to those vessels holding appropriate licences. I also hope shortly to announce new quota management arrangements which will begin the process of bringing the size of the fleet into line with the available fishing opportunities.
