To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount collected in tax and national insurance contributions by central Government as a percentage of gross domestic product for each year since 1977–78; and what is his estimate for 1989–90.

On the basis of the Autumn Statement forecast, the percentage for 1989–90 is 33.2.
