HC Deb 20 February 1990 vol 167 cc672-3W
Mr. Macdonald

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many practice approaches and overshoots were carried out by military aircraft at Stornoway during 1989.

Mr. Neubert

A total of 186 practice approaches and overshoots were carried out by military aircraft at Stornoway during 1989.

Mr. Macdonald

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the use made of Stornoway airport for military exercises during 1989, providing details of the numbers and types of aircraft, durations of their deployments to Stornoway, the titles of the exercises or deployments in each case and the number of aircraft movements carried out during each deployment.

Mr. Neubert

Stornoway airport was activated on two occasions for military exercises during 1989. Six RAF Tornado F3 aircraft and one RAF Sea King helicopter were deployed to Stornoway from 22 June to 30 June as part of a joint maritime course exercise (JMC 89/2); and six RAF Tornado F3 aircraft and one RAF Sea King helicopter were deployed there from 7 to 15 September 1989 as part of Exercise SHARP SPEAR. If takeoffs, landings, practice approaches and overshoots are counted as separate movements, there were 198 movements by aircraft deployed to Stornoway during JMC 89/2, and 167 during Exercise SHARP SPEAR.
