To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the currently available figure for the shortage of kidney organs for transplant.

The shortage of cadaveric kidneys available for transplant is conveniently measured by the waiting list held by the United Kingdom transplant service. The United Kingdom waiting list on 8 February 1990 comprised 3,485 patients.
