53. Mr. Wall

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the contents of the interim report on patterns of hospital medical staffing.

71. Mr. David Young

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the contents of the interim report on patterns of hospital medical staffing.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The report contains some useful information, but it covers the period before we launched two initiatives on junior doctors' hours of work in 1988 and 1989. It cannot, therefore, be expected to reflect the considerable progress made since then. That is not to say that I am complacent about some of the issues contained in the report and I have called all the interested parties together to discuss what solutions can be found jointly to reduce the hours our junior doctors have to work.
