Mr. Nicholas Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many members of the staff of the Charity Commission are employed to investigate charity-related fraud including tax evasion.

Forty members of the Charity Commission staff are employed in the monitoring and investigation of charities at risk of abuse, and in dealing with fraud, included tax-related schemes involving charities.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many qualified accountants there are on the staff of the Charity Commission.

Mr. John Patten

There are two qualified accountants on the staff of the Charity Commission. In addition, training is provided for staff who do not have accountancy qualifications in posts calling for it. The charity commissioners can also appoint qualified accountants for specific inquiries.
