HC Deb 19 February 1990 vol 167 c537W
76. Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what studies Her Majesty's Government have undertaken with regard to the effect of the single European market in 1992 on trade with Asian and African developing nations.

Mr. Redwood

I understand that my right hon. Friend the Minister for Overseas Development has authorised payment towards the conduct of a study by the Overseas Development Institute on the effect of the completion of the internal market on developing countries. The study is scheduled for completion in July 1990. An interim briefing paper is already available.

My Department has also given careful consideration to the external implications of the single market programme. The removal of remaining trade barriers will make it easier for non-EC companies to do business across the Community. After 1992, Asian and African developing countries will continue to enjoy preferential access to the Community market under arrangements established by the Lome convention and the generalised scheme of preferences.
