HC Deb 19 February 1990 vol 167 cc505-6W
37. Mr. Bowis

To ask the Attorney-General how many recent appeals there have been against over-lenient sentencing; and how many were successful.

in this country. Details of the applications considered are contained in the table. Detailed information on the average time taken to process cases is not available.

The Attorney-General

Since February 1989, when the power became effective, I have applied for leave to refer the sentencing in nine cases to the Court of Appeal. Leave has been granted in seven such cases, and sentences have been increased in six of the cases. I have withdrawn two cases in the light of later information. I have referred one case to the Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland; the sentence in that case was also increased.
