HC Deb 19 February 1990 vol 167 cc546-7W
Dame Elaine Kellett-Bowman

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many theatre sessions were cancelled in the Lancaster health authority in each of the last five years for which figures are available in(a) urology and (b) orthopaedics; and how many of these cancellations were due to (i) non-attendance of the consultant and (ii) non-attendance of the patient.

Mr. Freeman

Information requested about theatre sessions is given in the table:

Cancelled operating theatre sessions in the Lancaster health authority
Urology Trauma/Orthopaedics
1985–86 5 27
1986–87 7 52
1987–88 10 58
1988–89 11 66
1989–901 7 69
1 Part year.

The reasons for the cancellation of theatre sessions are extremely varied and no information is held centrally to distinguish, for example, cancellation resulting from the upgrading of theatre facilities from the non-availability of consultants or non-attendance of patients.
