Mr. Andrew Smith

To ask the Attorney-General, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Oxford, East on 31 January,Official Report, column 189, if he will list the research reports commissioned by the Lord Chancellor's Department as part of the civil justice review and give the cost of each contract; and if he will list any similar reports commissioned from outside management consultants since 1985 and give their date of completion and cost.

The following reports were commissioned by the Lord Chancellor's Department as part of the civil justice reviewPersonal Injuries Litigation Study": Inbucon Management Consultants Limited: 10 June 1985 to 31 January 1986: £140,498. Small Claims Study": Touche Ross Management Consultants: 9 December 1985 to 30 September 1986: £92,000. Commercial Court Study": Coopers and Lybrand Associates Limited: 17 March 1986 to 28 November 1986: £72,340. Enforcement of Debt Study": Touche Ross Management Consultants: 17 March 1986 to 9 January 1987: £138,000. Housing Cases Study": School for Advanced Urban Studies at the University of Bristol: I March 1986 to 9 January 1987: £144,702. The Lord Chancellor's Department has commissioned work from a number of management consultants since 1985 but only the following has been commissioned to report on an area similar to those listed above: Touche Ross: "A survey of Solicitors' firms conducting criminal legal aid work": October 1988: £24,000.
