families on benefit here who receive little or no maintenance. Regular payments of maintenance can be a great help to lone parents who work to move from dependence on benefit into work. We are therefore examining the whole maintenance system to establish how it can be improved. As part of this process 'we are examining maintenance arrangements abroad, including those in the United States, to see whether there are any lessons to be learned from them.
