My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs is in touch with the Chinese Government on a number of issues, including the future of Hong Kong, on which he reported to the House on 17 January.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government policy on human rights violations in China.

Mr. Maude

We have been unequivocal in our condemnation of the suppression of the pro-democracy movement in Peking last year. We and our partners will continue to take suitable opportunities to register our concerns.
