HL Deb 06 February 1990 vol 515 cc830-1WA
Lord Williams of Elvel

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are their policies to encourage greater trade between the United Kingdom and Eastern Europe.

The Minister of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Trefgarne)

The Government is well seized of the new commercial opportunities opening up in Eastern Europe. These include, in particular, some opportunities for direct investment; the possibility of increasing exports of goods and services; opportunities for joint ventures and other forms of industrial co-operation; as well as consultancy and management training.

The Government are encouraging British business to take full advantage of several UK, EC and multilateral assistance schemes becoming available to help and exploit these new opportunities.
