To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many factory inspectors were appointed in the past 10 years with the minimum qualifications of(a) higher national diploma, (b) polytechnic degree and (c) university degree.

The 276 factory inspectors recruited in the past 10 years were qualified to at least the levels specified, as follows:

  1. a) higher national diploma—2
  2. b) polytechnic degree—89
  3. c) university degree—185
