HC Deb 01 February 1990 vol 166 c250W
Mr. Roger King

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps are taken to ensure the removal of litter from motorway verges and central reservations.

Mr. Atkins

The Department's code of practice for routine maintenance prescribes the frequency with which its agents are required to clear litter from motorways. Frequencies vary according to local circumstances and are currently being reviewed with the aim of improving sections of road with the worst litter problems.

The Government propose to amend the Environmental Protection Bill so as to place a specific duty on the Crown to keep its land, including motorways, clear of litter.
