HC Deb 01 February 1990 vol 166 cc304-5W
162. Mr. O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he intends to amend the proposals for allowing the number of people from Hong Kong into the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maude

No.

Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many officials there are in the present Hong Kong administration at the levels which would be excepted from holding office under the terms of article 74 of the joint declaration.

Mr. Maude

[holding answer 31 January 1990]: Exclusion from office after 1997 of specific individuals under section IV of annex I to the joint declaration would depend on whether those individuals were considered Chinese nationals or foreign nationals under the terms of the Chinese nationality law. This is a matter for the Chinese Government.
