HC Deb 01 February 1990 vol 166 c264W
Mr. Straw

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish a table giving for the financial year 1990–91(a) capital allocations per pupil in county and voluntary controlled schools and (b) capital grant per pupil in grant-maintained schools.

Mr. MacGregor

It is not possible to provide figures on a comparable basis. For 1990–91 local education authorities have received annual capital guidelines for education. It is open to authorities to use the resources avaiable to them for capital purposes as they wish and they are free, within the flexibilities of the local government Acts, to spend above the level of their annual capital guideline from capital receipts and other sources. The annual capital guideline is not split between primary and secondary schools whereas all except one of the existing grant-maintained schools are secondary schools. Nor is information yet available about the distribution of pupils between the two sectors in 1990–91.
