Mr. McKelvey

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people in Kilmarnock in receipt of social security benefits are having deductions made at source for(a) poll tax arrears and (b) loan repayments.

Miss Widdecombe

[holding answer 17 December 1990]: Income support is the only social security benefit from which deductions for community charge arrears may be made. The number of deductions at 30 November 1990 was 536.

The number of social fund loans being recovered from income support customers in Kilmarnock at 30 November 1990 was 1,648.
