Lord O'Hagenasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they propose that the European Parliament be given greater powers to monitor the implementation and enforcement of European Community legislation.
The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness)The UK has already proposed strengthening the European Parliament's powers to monitor the implementation of the Community budget. We have encouraged both the EP and Commission to improve their monitoring of the implementation and enforcement of EC legislation. This will be considered in the inter-governmental conference on political union.
