asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much it is anticipated will have been spent in total on the British Library project at the end of this financial year, and what is the expected level of expenditure in each of the financial years between now and the year of completion of the project.

The new building for the British Library at St. Pancras will cost a total of £450 million in cash. By the end of financial year 1990–91 the cash expenditure on the building will have reached some £173 million. Rounded estimates of future annual expenditure are as follows:
