HL Deb 18 December 1990 vol 524 c48WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How the value to the nation of archaeological sites is assessed by the Department of Transport, and in what terms.

Lord Brabazon of Tara

The department seeks the advice of English Heritage in assessing archaeological sites, and takes that assessment into account, along with other environmental and economic factors, in developing proposals.

The Standing Advisory Committee on Trunk Road Assessment is currently considering the arguments for and against the monetary valuation of environmental effects. We look forward to receiving its report.
