HC Deb 11 December 1990 vol 182 cc381-2W
Mr. Gill

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps are being taken to ensure that cattle with enzootic bovine leukosis are not imported into the United Kingdom.

Mr. Maclean

Imported cattle must be accompanied by a health certificate, signed by an official veterinarian of the Government of the exporting country, confirming among other things that the animals originate from holdings which have been free of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) for up to three years, and that the animals have been subjected to the required testing for EBL, with negative results, before export.

From 1 July 1991, rules governing trade between member states of the European Community will require that cattle for breeding and production must come only from herds which are officially recognised as EBL free.
