To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what problems are being experienced with the use of the SA80 rifle.

When SA80 entered service experience showed that modifications to certain components would improve the strength and reliability of the weapon whilst retaining the greater accuracy and other advantages of the SA80 over its predecessors. These have been incorporated into a modification programme which is being implemented.
