To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many planning appeals were brought in each of the years 1986 to 1989 in relation to each local planning authority in Wales; how many were allowed; and what was the overall cost to his Department of the planning appeal system in each of those years.

The numbers of planning appeals brought and allowed are given in the table.

For the financial year 1989–90 the cost of the appeal system was £1,006,200. I regret that figures for earlier years are not available.
