Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the finances available to his Department and/or allocated by his Department to combat alcohol

misuse in each of the financial years 1987–88, 1988–89 and 1989–90 and indicate the amounts initially available in 1990–91, and any additional sums made available by his Department for this purpose since the start of the financial year.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

In addition to research and the general allocations made to health boards, the Scottish Home and Health Department provides grant support to the Scottish Council on Alcohol, the national voluntary organisation concerned with alcohol problems, and funds the Scottish Health Education Group. The Scottish Education Department gives grants to voluntary and other organisations under sections 9 and 10 of the Social Work (Scotland) Act 1968 and the Industry Department for Scotland supports local alcohol-related projects under the urban programme. In addition, the Scottish Home and Health Department and the Scottish Education Department jointly fund the alcohol studies centre at Paisley college of technology. Expenditure in the last three financial years and estimated expenditure in 1990–91 is set out in the table below.
