Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will list the restart menu options and indicate which of them involves the client leaving the claimant count;

(2) how many restart interviews were conducted in the period July 1986 to June 1989; what numbers were referred to each menu option; what numbers actually took up their referral; what numbers were referred to the unemployment benefit service for (a) non-attendance at interview, (b) non-availability and (c) refusal of suitable employment; and, of the latter three groups, what number had their benefit suspended or withdrawn, for Great Britain and each of the standard regions.

The employment service, which is responsible for the restart programme, became an executive agency on 2 April 1990. Mr. Mike Fogden, the employment service agency's chief executive, will be replying in writing to the hon. Gentleman.
