HC Deb 30 April 1990 vol 171 c400W
Mr. John Carlisle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether any request was made for police protection for Mr. Vivian Richards on his arrival at Heathrow airport on 23 April;

(2) what was the cost of the provision of a police escort for Mr. Vivian Richards on his arrival at Heathrow airport on 23 April.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

No request was made to the Home Office, but I understand that Mr. Richards was escorted by the police through Heathrow airport on 23 April to prevent congestion caused by the extensive media interest. No additional costs were incurred, and, contrary to some press reports, none of the police officers was armed.
