Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will give the target reductions for energy consumption in the buildings occupied by his Department.

Mr. Sainsbury

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Overseas Development Administration each aim to reduce energy consumption by 15 per cent. over the next five years at an annual rate of 3 per cent.

Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will give the energy consumption, broken down by fuel, of the buildings occupied by his Department for the latest year available.

Mr. Sainsbury

In the calendar year 1989, energy consumption in Foreign and Commonwealth Office buildings was:

Energy consumption
(i) Electricity 19,411,000 kwh
(ii) Gas 391,000 therms
(iii) Fuel Oil 1,003,000 litres

The figures are taken from statistical returns produced by the Property Services Agency (PSA).

The PSA does not provide details of ODA fuel consumption. However, expenditure in the financial year 1988–89 was:
