HC Deb 24 April 1990 vol 171 c175W
37. Mr. Janman

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total increase in the numbers of self-employed in the periods(a) 1959 to 1979 and (b) 1979 to 1989.

Mr. Nicholls

The estimated number of self-employed in the United Kingdom rose from 1,906,000 in June 1979 to 3,241,000 in June 1989, an increase of 1,335,000 or 70 per cent.

Estimates before 1970 are not strictly comparable with later figures due to a change in methodology. In 1969, there were an estimated 1,853,000 self-employed in the United Kingdom.
