HC Deb 24 April 1990 vol 171 c153W
Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what plans he has to introduce compulsory inspection of deer meat intended for human consumption; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

The European Commission has published proposals for health rules governing game which, among other things, would require inspection of deer meat intended for human consumption. In advance of decisions in Brussels we have encouraged local authorities to introduce inspection procedures for farmed deer slaughtered in abattoirs.

The production of deer meat, in common with all other food sold for human consumption, is subject to the general provision of the Food Act 1984 and the Food Hygiene (General) Regulations 1970.
