To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many seizures of illegally imported endangered species were made by the Hong Kong authorities in the second six months of 1989; how many seizures were made of similar categories intended for export; and if he will make a statement giving details of all seizures made, including country of origin.

[holding answer 29 March 1990]: The Hong Kong authorities made 60 seizures of illegally imported endangered species during the period July to December 1989:

Sea turtle 34 stuffed specimens and 119 eggs
Giant salamander (carcass) 1
Parrot (live) 15
Bird of prey plus owl 11 live, 4 carcasses and 2 stuffed specimens
Asiatic bony tongue fish (live) 29 tails
Black coral (skeleton) 4
Giant clam (live) 4
Orchid 1
Ivory 2.39 tonnes

Countries of export included China, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Federal Republic of Germany, Spain, France, Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, United States of America, Venezuela, South Africa.

Only one seizure was made of endangered species intended for export: a live parrot destined for Switzerland.
